GP of Lombardia went positive for Team SM Action Yamaha. At Mantua, Renaux made his second Pole of the season and finished 4th, just out of the podium places. Jacobi entered the “top 10” with a solid Race 2. In the EMX250 the Norwegian Fredriksen made it to his first podium as he won Race 1 and finished 2nd overall.
The FIM Motocross World Championship started its second three-in-a-row week of races with the GP of Lombardia hosted at the “Tazio Nuvolari” circuit at Mantua. The next rounds will take place at the same circuit and will be named GP of the City of Modena and GP of Europe as the 2020 season keeps moving on.
This time the EMX250 Championship was there to race too, and Team SM Action Yamaha deployed, other than Maxime Renaux #959 (MX2) and Henry Jacobi #29 (MXGP), the Norwegian Hakon Fredriksen #42, who disputed his fourth round of the quarter-of-litre class with the team.
After that he showed some good speed in the previous rounds, Hakon was determined to make a good result on the insidious sand of this track and in fact he finished 2nd already in Free Practice. In the following Timed Practice, the young Norwegian confirmed his determination as he finished again in 2nd place and he set up good hopes for the races.
Satisfaction arrived in Race 1, as Hakon started well and he positioned just out of the “top 5”. His progression through lap 1 and lap 5 was consistent and at lap 6 he made it to the lead. He then rode his bike without making any mistakes and after 14 laps he conquered his first victory of the European MX Championship. In Race 2 Hakon was not lucky, as he crashed a few turns after the start and he found himself at the back of the group. The Norwegian did not panic though, and he made a furious recovery which brought him to the 8th place at the checkered flag. At the end of the day he conquered the first podium of his career as he finished in 2nd position, and the gained points allowed him to improve his position in the “top 10” of the General Classification, as he is now 8th.
In the MX2 Sunday started in the best way for Maxime Renaux. The French and his Yamaha were really fast straight away on the insidious sand of the track and after the fastest lap in Free Practice he gained his second Pole Position of the season. In the late morning, the riders aligned for the start of Race 1. Maxime's start was good but not perfect and the French was 3rd after turn 1, but he made it up to 2nd place already before the end of lap 1. For the whole race, he rode well and he avoided getting involved in hard situations, but during the last lap he made a little mistake and he was overtaken, so he arrived in 3rd position at the checkered flag. In Race 2 he started a little further back and after lap 1 he was 8th. His race had ups and downs: in the first part he moved up to the 5th place, in the middle part he had a few issues and made a few mistakes that moved him back some places, while in the last laps he found concentration again and he finished 5th. At the end of the day, Maxime finished 4th, just 1 point out of the podium, while he kept the 3rd position in the General Classification.
In the MXGP Henry Jacobi found good feelings with the “Tazio Nuvolari” circuit too, and he finished Free Practice in 7th place. He then lost some speed and qualified 18th. In Race 1 Jacobi started just out of the “top 20”, but lap after lap he made some overtakes and he was 13th with 2 laps to go. Unluckily, he lost one position in the end and he crossed the finish line in 14th place. The turning point of the weekend arrived in Race 2 for Henry: after a good start he was in the “top 5” and after a solid race (the best one so far in the 2020 season) he finished 8th. At the end of the day, he was 11th and he moved up four places in the General Classification as he is now 15th.
The next appointment for Team SM Action Yamaha with the Motocross World Championship will take place on Tuesday the 29th and Wednesday the 30th at the GP of the City of Modena.
Maxime Renaux #959: “Today went well, but not great. In qualifying, I hit the pole but then in the heats two less than perfect starts affected the final result. In race 1 then, I crashed on the last lap and from 2nd I was, I finished 3rd. In race 2 I had to come back from behind, so I didn't go beyond 5th place. All in all it went well even though I lost 3rd place by just one point. In view of the next GPs, I have to work more on the starts, which are very important. Hello."
